Genesis 18:19 AMP "For I have known (chosen, acknowledged) him [as My own], so that he may teach and command his children and the sons of his house after him to keep the way of the Lord and to do what is just and righteous, so that the Lord may bring Abraham what He has promised him."
From the above scripture, God knew that his servant Abraham would teach and direct his children according to the ways of the Lord. This was not the case of Eli and his children, who did evil in the sight of God under their father's supervision. Effective parenting as a rule must be based on the Bible, rather than culture.
Here are 3 areas in which parents can teach and direct their children :
#1. In the Word of God.
Psalms 119:105 states, "Thy word [is] a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."
Teaching children to know the Word of God for themselves orders their steps in the Lord and helps reveal their purpose in this world that is full of darkness.
#2. In the choosing of their friends.
The Bible says in
1 Corinthians 15:33, "Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners."
We can also teach children by protecting them from bad company. Make sure they don't adopt bad behaviour from bad company.
#3. In loving the Kingdom and the Lord’s house.
Hebrews 10:25 advises us not to forsake "the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some [is]; but exhorting [one another]: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching."This is a command, and so we have to teach our children to love the house of God.
Beloved, it is expedient that we teach our children using the Word of God and not the standards of the world.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, give me the grace to be an effective parent to teach my children according to your Word, and as a son or daughter to be able to walk in the way of righteousness, in Jesus' name, Amen.
