Jude 1:20 (ESV) “But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit”.

George Jeffreys, the great evangelist and founder of Elim Pentecostal Church, said he prayed in English. If it seemed inadequate, he prayed in his more expressive native tongue, Welsh. If that failed, he prayed in tongues!

Most of my prayer is done in tongues, because when I begin to speak a language of my understanding, after a short while I do not know what more to say.

Speaking in tongues is extremely needful for the Church, as that is the initial evidence of the Holy Spirit’s baptism.

Here are three other things to know about speaking in tongues:

1. Speaking in tongues is a sign of a believer. Every believer must desire to speak in tongues. In fact, according to Christ, one of the signs that a person has believed in the message of the gospel is that he would speak in tongues. Jesus declared in Mark 16:17, “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues.”

2. Speaking in tongues edifies the believer. Edification has to do with building up or establishing oneself. When you speak in tongues, you build up and strengthen your spirit man, and are therefore able to resist external pressure or attack. Apostle Paul reveals to us in 1 Corinthians 14:4, “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.”

3. Speaking in tongues unravels Kingdom mysteries to the believer. Whenever we are out of words, the tongues we speak communicate mysteries for God to act on our behalf through the Spirit. “He who prays in an unknown tongue does not understand and no one understands him, howbeit in the spirit he speaks mysteries” (1 Corinthians 14:2).

Precious one, speaking in tongues is so important and beneficial to the believer because it is a sign of that a person has believed in Jesus, it edifies the believer, and unravels Kingdom mysteries to him. Therefore, speak in tongues!

Prayer: Heavenly Father, may Your will for our lives manifest as we speak in tongues in Jesus’ name, amen.
