1 Corinthians 6:18 (NIV) “Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.”
There are many things the Bible warns us against. But when it comes to sexual sin, the word of God does not advise us to manage, deal with, or fight sexual sin—it tells us to flee! We need to run away from it, and rather pursue purity before and during marriage.
Particularly in the Old Testament, the people of God were expected to marry as virgins and so a “token” (proof) of virginity was required on the wedding night. In the New Testament, God expects even more of us.
The following are 3 reasons why you need to keep yourselves pure before and during marriage:
1. Christ lives in you. Galatians 2:20 (NKJV) states, “I have been crucified in Christ ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the son of God , who loved me and gave Himself for me”.
2. Sex outside marriage affects you like no other sins do. The sexual union is not just a natural act; we become one spirit as well as one flesh. In 1 Corinthians 6:15, the Scripture says, “Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid”.
3. It brings guilt and condemnation which inhibit many believers from serving the Lord freely. Romans 12:1 exhorts us, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service”.
Precious one, know you are a new creature. Your old life is dead with Christ, so flee sexual sin and pursue purity.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, grant me the grace to keep myself pure before and during marriage, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
