Matt 22:29 (KJV) Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.
The knowledge of the Scriptures is necessary for a victorious life. In this morning’s reading, Jesus said to the religious people of His time that, they erred, or were making a mistake, because they did not know the Scriptures. They erred because the knowledge of the Scriptures is necessary for a victorious life; and, in fact, many errors and mistakes can easily be avoided by the knowledge of them.
Let us consider some other reasons why knowledge of the Scriptures is significant:
1. The Scriptures help us to resist the devil. Jesus, in the day of temptation, pulled out of the wells of knowledge He acquired from the Scriptures to stand against the devil. We see in Luke 4:4 (KJV),
“Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God”.
Thus believers who lack knowledge of what is written will always be defeated in the day of temptation.
2. The Scriptures are profitable for many things in our lives. The Bible says in 2 Timothy 3:16-17,
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness”.
3. The Scriptures keep us from stumbling. The Scriptures give light, as the Psalmist declares in Ps 119:130,
“The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple”, and “If a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him” (John 11:10).
Therefore, there is the danger of repeated stumbling as believers walk in darkness by reason of their lack of knowledge of the Scriptures.
Precious one, do not err, not knowing the Scriptures. From today, get into the Scriptures, and your life will never be the same!
Prayer : Heavenly Father, according to Ps 119:30, may Your light be injected into my life as I seek Your word; and by that light, may I not fall into avoidable errors, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
