Matthew 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
The French have a proverb, which states, “A good meal ought to begin with hunger.” It is hard to enjoy a meal when you are not yet hungry. But, when you are hungry, anything tastes good.
Precious one, if we approach the Word of God and our spiritual life with a hunger to be satisfied, we will be satisfied every time. Have you ever been really hungry? When you fast you experience obsessive hunger. It doesn’t matter what you are doing, all your body yearns for is food. That hunger motivates you to find food. The same is true with spiritual hunger. It will motivate you to move forward with God. It causes you to pursue Him in ways you never expected.
Now here are 3 things about hunger for the things of God:
1. Growth starts with a hunger for the word.
The Bible shows us in 1 Peter 2:2 that, “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word that ye may grow thereby.” Growth comes faster when the Christian has a desire to be filled. A hunger properly satisfied results in spiritual growth.
2. God will not force-feed us until we hunger
God created man and put a free will in him. He would not force Himself on us. That’s why in Psalm 81:10 He said, “Open your mouth wide and I will fill it.”
3. Spiritual hunger means you are alive
The fact that you are dissatisfied shows that God has greater things in mind for you than you are experiencing now.
Precious one, do you feel dissatisfied with the status quo—your church attendance, Bible study, prayer, etc.? It is time for you to start hungering for another spiritual meal from the Lord.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, increase my hunger for more of You in Jesus’ name, Amen.
