1. What is a curse? In Hebrew, many words are translated as a curse. One of them is the word arar and among other things, it means to resist, to hem with obstacles, to execrate, to be made to be disliked, to bind with a spell. So basically a curse can be defined as a legal invitation given to the adversary ( antidikos ), Satan, the opponent, to resist you, to hem you with obstacles, circumstances, to execrate you, to cause you to be disliked, to bind you with a spell, to stop you from going forward or to make you unfruitful.

2. Why are curses so important even in the new testament? Because they are bound by spiritual laws and will be enforced if not dealt with properly. Many lives are at stake due to curses; many are sick as a result of an unknown curse, others are poor despite their giving because they are battling with invisible forces. Some keep on failing and going in a circle due to a remnant curse that has not yet been broken nor dealt with. A curse can stop you from fulfilling your destiny and can even prevent the hand of God from moving in a particular aspect of your life because there is a legal reason preventing God from helping you.

In these lessons, we are going to learn about a type of curse called a Circumstantial Generational Curse.

3. What then, is a Circumstantial Curse?

Jeremiah 44:17-18  «But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.
But since we left off to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.»

Circumstantial curses cause you to find yourself in the same negative situation your forefathers may have been in or in the same situation you may have been in the past. The first thing to know about a circumstantial curse is that it is a generational type of curse which causes you to find yourself in the same negative situation your forefathers may have been in or in the same situation you may have been in the past. In the verse above, the people started experiencing famine, hunger, poverty, destruction, as soon as they stopped worshipping the legion of demons called the Queen of Heaven. They refused to obey what Prophet Jeremiah asked them to do because their Fathers followed a certain pattern in the past by worshipping the legion of demons called the Queen of heaven and they were prosperous as long as they did that. That means that there was a time when their forefathers did not worship the demon called the Queen of heaven and things were not working for them. Not in their own time, they stopped worshipping the Queen of heaven and they found themselves in the same predicament. These people did not realize that, by worshipping the Queen of Heaven in the past, their forefathers had unknowingly given legal access to that legion of devils called the Queen of heaven to enforce a curse on them, to make them go through hunger, shame, destruction. They were thinking that now that they had forsaken the Queen of heaven and turned to God they were doomed but it was actually the opposite. The only thing here is that the legion of demons called the Queen of heaven was legally attacking them in their finances since they stopped worshipping them.

The Story of Abraham and His son Isaac. In the time of Father Abraham, 3 things happened:

  • There was a famine that forced him to go to Egypt and live there as a foreigner. Genesis 12:10. There was also a famine in the time of Isaac. Genesis 26:1

  • Abraham said of his wife that she was his sister due to circumstances. Genesis  12:13. Isaac found himself in the same circumstances and did the same. Genesis 26:6.

Do you often find yourself in a similar negative situation that your father may have found himself in the past? Or do you find yourself in the same kind of negative situation you may have found yourself in the past? You may be dealing with a Circumstantial Curse.
