Luke 12:20 “But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?”

Jesus tells a parable in Luke 12:16-21 about a rich man whose business produced an unprecedented breakthrough such that the harvest exceeded his available storage capacity. He was so excited that he went to bed formulating a plan of action for the abundant surplus he had received. Oblivious to this man was the fact that God was interested and listening in on his plan of action.

Like this rich man, we all decide on what to do with the blessings that come our way; and just as we follow any trending news, God also follows our course of action. The question is, will God click the “like” or “unlike” button when He follows you? Will He share your page and comment, “Thou good and faithful servant” or rather “Thou fool”?

Here are three things we can glean from this parable:

1. God is the Supplier of abundance. According to the parable, the ground of the rich brought forth plentifully. This was a blessing from God because God said in Deuteronomy 28:4, “Blessed shall be…the fruit of thy ground.” Every rich believer, who is into genuine and honest trade, must acknowledge that God is the Giver of wealth and abundance; therefore, he is only a steward of what has been given to him.

2. Wealth can be given to anyone. The rich man claimed personal ownership of the things God had given him, calling them “all my fruits and all my goods”. Sadly, God required his soul that night asking him, “Whose shall these things be, which thou hast provided?” This implies that God can swap the beneficiary of His blessing anytime He wants if He detects foolishness. We are, in truth, stewards and not owners of the blessings of God.

3. God has an expectation concerning our stewardship. According to Jesus, “So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich towards God” (Luke 12:21). Jesus makes it clear that God expects those who receive His blessings to be rich towards Him. To be rich or generous towards God is to release one’s riches into the things God has an interest in, particularly His kingdom and the salvation of souls.

Precious one, God desires to enrich us superabundantly till we have no room to receive it. When we receive it, let us remember that God is the Supplier of it, and therefore has an expectation of us to not be a “Thou fool”.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unending supply and abundance in my life. As I determine in my heart to be rich towards You, cause me to continue walking in Your abundance, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
