Proverbs 10:15 “The rich man’s wealth is his strong city; the destruction of the poor is their poverty.”
The above scripture makes us understand that the rich man’s wealth represents his strong city or defence. In fact, the Bible does not commend poverty, but rather makes it clear that it is bad to remain poor. Therefore, you can’t make poverty your friend or entertain thoughts of poverty.
We are more protected when we are wealthy in a materialist world than when we are poor because poverty makes people vulnerable to many of the common dangers of life.
Let us look at three dangers of poverty:
1. Poverty demeans
Pro. 19:4 states,
“Wealth makes many friends but the poor is separated from his neighbour.”
This is because people normally see the poor as a nuisance, as a kind of parasite or leech that must be conveniently avoided. There are some relatives people do everything to avoid simply because they think they always come to make demands on them.
2. Poverty reduces a person’s influence
In our society today the rich have their voices heard much more than the poor. In Eccl.9:15-16 the Bible says,
“Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man. Then said I, wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless, the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.”
When you are poor your wisdom is questioned by those who listen to you, wondering why you can’t use your wisdom to change your situation. I am yet to see a poor man who wins in any election. It is not the best candidates that win in elections, but the richest ones.
3. Poverty is slavery
In Pro. 22:7 Scripture tells us,
“The rich ruleth over the poor and the borrower is a servant to the lender.”
The rich always rules over the poor in our world. It is always true that the borrower is a servant to the lender.
Precious one, the Lord expects you to get rich so as to enable you attain the full experience of the Lord’s blessing over your life.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, grant me grace and wisdom to get wealth and be a channel of blessing to my church, friends and family, in Jesus’ name.
